Sweety Pies by Patty Pinner is an extraordinary cookbook full of homemade pies inspired by the women in her life. A real page-turner, you won't be able to put it down!
Part one in a series of three articles.
"Sweety Pies: An Uncommon Collection Of Womanish Observations, With Pie" is a collection of warm and cozy memoirs all wrapped up in a luscious cookbook. This tasty book reads like a personal journal, pulling you into Patty Pinner's life along with the women that inspired her and made a lasting impression on a young girl's heart.
Patty Pinner's "Sweety Pies"
Unlike most cookbooks on the shelves today, Patty Pinner's book "Sweety Pies" is not just a book of recipes. First and foremost, it's a story of Patty's life with a delightful dollop of pie recipes served on the side. Patty is an accomplished baker. She made her first pie when she was three. It was a simple pie made with fresh mud and decorated with rose petals!
Each recipe has a story to tell. By the time you're done with this book, you'll be intimately involved with the entire cast of characters. From Mama, who has quite a few pies of her own, to aunts, cousins and friends and even the shapely Ava Joy (the woman that stopped traffic in their small town). Cousin Gracie, Miss Eudora, Mamie Short, Miss Hatfield, Cousin Eunice and the Postmistress all make an appearance. If recipes are all one is looking for, the cozy womanish anecdotes before each recipe might be too much for an impatient baker.
Most recipes are accompanied by full-color, mouthwatering photos. Starting where any good cookbook of pies would start, the first chapter is devoted to pie crust. And not just Patty's Flaky Pie Crust, but an entire primer on how to beautifully finish off your pie edges with style.
Berry Pies tempt you with the spring and summer harvest. The familiar Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie, Fresh Raspberry Pie, and Mixed Berry Pie recipes are nestled in with tasty offerings like Blueberry and Cranberry Pies.
Cereal Pies using breakfast cereals for the fillings are an interesting twist. Patty's mother used to say, "You may want a handsome husband, but do you really need one?" The same goes for cereal pies. Not the prettiest gals at the dance, but satisfying, easy and delicious nonetheless. Simple ordinary cereals seen only in your kids' breakfast bowls make a surprising appearance in pies like Oatmeal Nut Pie, Granola Pie, Old-Fashioned Cornflake Pie and even a Rice Krispies Pie!
Cream & Custard Pies come next in the line-up. Coconut Pie, Buttermilk Pie, Lemon Chess Pie, Custard Pie and a good variety of cream pies round out this tempting selection. Here's a recipe to make your mouth water: Ava Joy's Peanut Butter Cream Pie with fresh whipped cream. Better pour a glass of cold milk for this one. You'll need it!
Fruit Pies are right where you would expect them to be and include traditional Homemade Apple Pie, Cherry Pie, Lemon, Peach and — the most unique pie of all — Sister Curry's Orange Tang Pie, made with none other than the astronauts' orange breakfast drink of choice.
Nut & Sweet Vegetable Pies showcases a variety of pecan pies, pumpkin, squash and potato pies and a colorful Grated Carrot Pie. Scents of cinnamon and nutmeg seem to rise up from the cookbook's pages.
Meringue Pies with all their fluffy goodness, are last but not least. Classic Lemon Meringue Pie, Key Lime and Apple Meringue are very impressive. And when you think you've tasted it all, there's a Chocolate Meringue Pie that will knock your socks off.
The Patty Pinner collection also includes "Sweets: A Collection of Soul Food Desserts and Memories." Patty lives, works, writes and bakes in Saginaw, Michigan.
