This easy recipe for apple pie is particular well suited for holiday dinners, summer picnics and Fourth of July parties as it travels well and can be prepared a day ahead of time.
How to Make a Homemade Pie Crust from Scratch
Although pre-made pie crusts can be used, this easy pie crust recipe is flavorful and quick to prepare. Butter should be chilled and stored in the refrigerator until used. Softened or melted butter will not make a flaky crust.
Homemade Pie Crust Recipe
Ingredients:
1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
2 Tbsp ice water
Directions:
Preheat over to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) Sift together flour, salt and sugar. Add in cold butter and combine with fingertips until fine crumbs form.
Slowly add in water one tablespoon at a time until dough begins to come together. Dough should still be flaky and semi-dry.
Roll out dough between two sheets of plastic wrap until it is 1/8" thick. Plastic wrap will prevent the dough from sticking to the counter top and will also make for easy transfer to the pie pan.
Line a 9" pie pin with the rolled out dough. Prick bottom of pan with a fork and bake for 15 minutes.

Easy Homemade Caramel Apple Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
2 batches homemade pie crust
1 recipe French butter caramel sauce
4 large Jonagold apples
3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
3 Tbsp granulated sugar
2 Tbsp vanilla powder
3/4 tsp cinnamon
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a 9" pie plate with one batch of homemade pie crust, prick bottom with a fork, and bake for 15 minutes. When finished cooking, remove and set aside.
Meanwhile, peel, core and slice apples to 1/4" thickness. In separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, vanilla powder and cinnamon. Sprinkle over apple slices and toss until well coated. Cover and refrigerate to prevent browning while preparing butter caramel sauce.
To prepare pie, line the bottom of the baked pie crust half way vanilla/cinnamon dusted apples. Cover with half of the caramel sauce. Repeat with remaining apples and remaining caramel sauce. Apples will cook down during baking so it is alright if apples dome over the edge of the pie plate.
Cover pie with remaining pie crust. Flute sides and cut decorative designs into crust if desired.
Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until crust is lightly brown. Remove from oven and cool for one hour to allow caramel and filling to set.
This fresh baked apple pie can be served immediately after cooling, or can be refrigerated and transferred to the site of a summer picnic or holiday party. Serve with vanilla ice-cream or whipped cream.
