Kids and adults alike will rave over the Jack-o-lantern and bat cookies at the Halloween party.

The treats are fairly easy to make and are absolutely delicious. And with a few moderations, they can be transformed into cookies for any fall festival.

Ingredients for Sugar Cookies

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tarter

Making Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Cream butter, oil, and sugars in large bowl.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time and then mix in vanilla.
  4. Next combine flour, baking soda and cream of tarter and stir into the mixture.

Jack-O-Lantern Cookies

It is easier to shape the cookies directly on the cookie sheet. For Jack-o-Lanterns, flatten the dough into a circle about ¼ inch thick. Shape the circle into a pumpkin by pushing a notch in the top for the stem and three in the bottom. Make a small cone with dough and press it into the notch to make the stem. (Demonstration picture below)

Bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 8 – 10 minutes or until golden brown.

Make orange buttercream icing by mixing red and yellow food coloring together. Frost the cookie.

Use a chocolate sandwich cookie for the eyes and mouth. Take the sandwich cookie apart. Each Jack-o-lantern will use one side of the cookie. Cut the cookie in half with a butter knife in a sawing motion. This will keep it from breaking into pieces. One half is the mouth and the other half will be cut into half again for the eyes.

Bat Cookies

To make a bat, pat the dough into a semi-circle ¼ inch thick and make one notch at the top of the curved side where the head will go and several notches across the bottom for the wings. Make a ball with dough and stick it into the notch at the top. Make two small triangles and attach them to the head for ears. (Demonstration picture below)

Bake the cookies for 8 – 10 minutes or until golden brown.

Make black buttercream icing. If black food coloring is available, that is the best option but if not mix green and red together until a blackish, brown color is achieved.

Spread the icing over the cookies, making points at the ears to enhance the look of a bat.

Halloween cookies are the perfect snack for any October party. Once the icing hardens, they can be stacked and taken or displayed on a spooky platter.
