Combine some frosting and creativity to turn a favorite sugar cookie recipe into a fun springtime desert. Bunnies and baby chickens are easy to shape without cutters.
Both shapes start with sugar cookie dough. The dough can be either homemade or a store bought. In either case, chill the dough about two hours before starting.
Equipment and Materials Needed
rolling pin (unless dough is in a roll or tube)
small amount of flour for rolling
baking sheet
round cookie cutter, biscuit cutter or small drinking glasses (two different sizes are needed for the baby chick shape)
frosting
variety of small candy pieces, colored frosting or dried fruit pieces
Creating a Bunny Shaped Cookie
If dough is in a roll or tube start by slicing off the pinched ends and putting them to the side. Then do the following steps:
Cut off ¼ inch slices to form the bunny's head and place on baking sheet.
Pull small pieces from the pinched ends and form them into small rope sections.
Slip two ropes under one round slice and pinch or press lightly to form ears. It is okay to leave finger prints since these will be covered by frosting later.
If using homemade or a sugar cookie dough that is not in a roll follow the following steps:
Lightly dust the counter and rolling pin with flour.
Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness.
Use round cutter or open end of a drinking glass to cut circular shapes for the bunny's head and place on baking sheet.
Reroll the dough and continue to cut circles until there is a small amount of dough remaining.
Form small ropes with the remaining dough – these will become the bunny ears.
Slip two ropes under one round slice and pinch or press lightly to form ears. It is okay to leave finger prints since these will be covered by frosting later.
Creating a Baby Chick Shaped Cookie
If dough is in a roll or tube start by slicing off the pinched ends so that the center piece remaining is slightly more than half the original length of the roll. Put the ends to the side and do the following steps:
Cut off ¼ inch slices to form the baby chick's body and place on baking sheet.
Lightly flour the counter and a rolling pin, then roll the pinched ends so they are ¼ inch thick.
Use a cutter or the open end of a glass that is slightly smaller than the chick's body to cut circles for the head.
Slip one smaller circle under one round slice and pinch or press lightly to connect the head to the body. It is okay to leave finger prints since these will be covered by frosting later.
If using homemade or a sugar cookie dough that is not in a roll follow the following steps:
Lightly dust the counter and rolling pin with flour.
Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness.
Use the larger of the round cutters or open end of a drinking glasses to cut circular shapes for the baby chick's body and place on baking sheet.
Use the smaller of the cutters or glasses to cut circular shapes for the chick's head.
Roll the dough again and continue to cut circles until the dough has been completely used.
Slip one smaller circle under one round slice and pinch or press lightly to connect the head to the body. It is okay to leave finger prints since these will be covered by frosting later.
Bake the cookies in a preheated 375 F oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack. Once cooled, the cookies can be frosted, then use small candy pieces, small amounts of colored frosting or small dried fruit pieces to create facial features.
