There’s a lot to be said about a delicious pie with succulent apples and a crust that’s been baked to perfection. The trick is not only in the selection of apples but also in the technique used to make a flakey and light crust. This recipe is a definite winner and by following this tutorial it will ensure a perfect pie comes out of the oven each and every time.

Ingredients For the Crust

  • 2 cups white flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 6 tbsp lard shortening
  • 6-8 tbsp ice water

Ingredients For the Pie Filling

  • 6 peeled and sliced apples
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vinegar

Preparing the Crust

The crust needs to be made before starting on the rest of the pie. In total it will probably take about 45 minutes to make the crust. Making a flakey and light pie crust is an art in itself but rest assured, this one will work magnificently each time and it is so simple!

  1. Measure all of the ingredients for the crust and place them in a large bowl.
  2. Use a fork to blend all of the ingredients thoroughly.
  3. Divide the dough into two balls and place them onto a small sheet of plastic wrap.
  4. Place the dough balls into the refrigerator for a minimum or 20 minutes.

Tips For a Perfect Crust

There are three absolute musts when making this pie crust. Firstly, the dough should be handled as little as possible. This includes when blending the ingredients. By using a fork it will allow the dough to remain cool. The ingredients should only be blended enough to mix everything together and no more than that. Secondly, the ice water used in the dough needs to be as cold as possible. It is helpful to place a cup of water with a few ice cubes in the freezer while measuring out the rest of the ingredients. Lastly, the dough needs to have time to chill in the fridge; the longer the better.

Preparing the Pie Filling

While the dough is chilling in the fridge the filling can be prepared. There are no secrets to making this apple pie filling; it’ll just taste delicious every time. To prepare the filling:

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl.
  2. Peel the apples and cut into slices. Be sure all seeds and core parts are removed.
  3. Cover the apple slices with the mixture.

Steps to Build the Pie

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F and grease the pie dish well.
  2. Roll out one ball of the pie dough and place it into the pie dish.
  3. Using a fork poke lots of holes in the bottom of the dough to prevent it from bubbling.
  4. Place the pie filling mixture in the pie dish and sprinkle some extra cinnamon over it.
  5. Roll out the second ball of dough and place it on top of the pie.
  6. Tuck in the edges to make a crust and to prevent the filling from leaking out.
  7. Cut a few slits into the top of the pie and pop it in the oven.
  8. Bake for 40-50 minutes until the pie is golden brown.
  9. Cool, slice, and enjoy!

Making a perfect apple pie each time will be quick and easy to do with this recipe and tips for a flakey and light crust.
